In this course, you will learn about the history of wheelchairs and how, why and when they are used. You will gain understanding about performing a needs assessment and evaluation on patients in order to set them up with the proper type and size of wheelchair. This course also explores the various parts of a wheelchair, what they do and how they affect the body. You will also discover how the functionality of a wheelchair affects a person's comfort, health and mobility. Finally, this course explains how the equipment should be adjusted to avoid causing complications for the patient.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Assess a patient's needs and measurements for the use of a wheelchair
- Classify the parts of a wheelchair and their functions
- Analyze a person's mobility level and posture
- Evaluate destructive postures related to wheelchair use
- Select an appropriate wheelchair based on evaluation and observational findings
- Determine candidacy for advanced wheelchair technology
- Adjust equipment in order to maximize patient safety, comfort and functionality
